Messiah Prophet Band - Rock the Flock (U.C.A.N.) 1984
1. "Rock the Flock"
In the late 80's/early 90's I was really into Christian metal and had a huge collection of Christian bands. For some reason, despite loving "Master of the Metal" I never picked up this independent release from Messiah Prophet. Many consider this to be a re-release of a classic album, but I find it to be total cheese. I suppose this is one of those albums that had I grown up with it I may like it now. Hearing it for the first time in 2001, however, the music just did not stand the test of time and sounds very dated. I love their follow up album "Master of the Metal" but as I said, I grew up with that one. Still, comparing the two, I find it hard to believe this is the same band. First of all the name is Messiah Prophet BAND? What was up with all the Christian bands in the early 80's calling themselves blah blah BAND. I can rattle off a bunch of names right off the top of my head. The music and the lyrics, however, are what really strike me as corny. "Don't stop, rock the flock..."
For the longest time I only owned this tape that I had bought in 1986 before CDs were in abundance. It took me until 1998 to finally find an original CD copy. (I also own a vinyl copy.) The music sounds a bit dated now, but still sounds good to me. This was actually one of my favorite CDs in the mid 80's along with Saint's "Too Late for Living" which came out the same year as 'Master of the Metal' on the same label. Even now, just looking at the song titles I can sing the choruses to most of these songs, which shows either the band knew how to write a solid hook or I just played the thing so much it's permanently engraved into my brain. "He is the Master of the Metal" chugga chugga chugga...Gotta love it!
