Motörhead
rule! This box set is an awesome testimony to over three decades of monstrous
rock 'n roll and heavy metal. I have never been that big of a Hawkwind fan, but I gotta say I was quite amused to hear Hawkwinds' version of
"Motorhead" complete with horns and fiddles. The first four discs are laid out
in chronological order, starting with the aformentioned Hawkwind track, all
the way through Motörhead's 2002 release "Hammered." Disc five is devoted to
live performances that span 1978 through 1999. About half the tracks are alternative
takes, BBC recordings, and unreleased live material. The other half is songs
that have appeared on the various Motorhead album over the years. As with any
box set on a band that has been a long time favorite, there are songs that I
wish were included that were not."Love Me Like A Reptile" immediately comes
to mind. There were a few rarities I was disappointed not to find on this collection
as well. "Eagle Rock" a song that was only released on a rare "1916" promo CD
titled "No Voices in the Sky". Also I have yet to even hear the song "Hard Core"
that was written by Dee Snider and recorded by Motorhead for some movie soundtrack.
I'm beginning to wonder if this song even really exists in any form other than Dee's version on "Never Let the
Bastards Wear You Down." However, Motörhead's version of Twisted
Sister's "Shoot 'Em Down" was included. Other than these tracks I was hoping
would be included, I have no complaints about this box set and found it quite
enjoyable. It's a comprehensive set and a good overview of one of the earliest
bands to combine punk and heavy metal. It's quite amazing how a band that many
label as dinosaurs that won't change, has changed over the years. Just take
a listen to disc one, then pop in disc four and listen to the difference. While
Motorhead has stayed true to their sound despite changes in line-ups, they certainly
have progressed over the years. The box set also contains a 60 page, full color
booklet with a full history of the band and a ton of great photos and a poster.
Enough goodies to keep this Motorhead fan happy for quite some time.
